The School of Nursing, Abuja, was established in 1981 at a temporary site in Suleja, Niger state. The General Hospital Suleja served as the school’s clinical base for the student nurses’ clinical experience under provisional approval by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. Today, the institution operates from its permanent site at U.A.T.H Gwagwalada Road serving its purpose of solving the health needs of the people of the Federal Capital Territory. The school has a total of six(6) departments; the nursing department, anatomy and physiology department, medical surgical nursing department, primary health care department, family health department, and general studies department. The school runs a Basic Nursing Programme which lasts for a duration of 3years. It also runs a Post Basic Nursing Programme which lasts for 18months.
FCT School of Nursing admits candidates for two different programs yearly. The 3year basic nursing program which starts in September is meant for secondary school leavers, while the 18 months post-basic nursing program which commences in March is meant for qualified midwives.
Application forms are advertised for and purchased at a prescribed fee and candidates who fulfill the nursing and midwifery council entry requirements are invited for an entrance examination and oral interview for those who pass the entrance examination which is organized and conducted by the HHSS/nursing department.

Entry Requirements For Basic Nursing Programme
Holders of WASC or its equivalent with at least 5 credit passes including English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology at not more than 2 sittings. WASC, G.C.E, or NECO results should not exceed 10years from the date of sitting for the examination.
Entry Requirements For Post Basic Nursing Programme
The post-basic nurse training is open to registered midwives. They should possess at least evidence of completion of the one-year mandatory community midwifery and the notification of registration from the council in addition to the basic entry requirements stipulated for the basic training program.

Other entry requirements for admission include certain categories of persons authorized by the nursing & midwifery council of Nigeria to spend a specified length of time in an approved training school in Nigeria before registration (foreign graduate nurses).
