Nurses deal with life, death, and everything in between. Nurses are responsible for assisting physicians in administering patient care, providing advice and educating patients on a variety of medical conditions, and giving advice to the patient as well as their family.
Registered nurses often work in hospitals or outpatient facilities, where they provide hands-on care to patients by administering medications, managing intravenous lines, observing and monitoring patients’ conditions, maintaining records and communicating with doctors.
Nurses work long hours — 12-hour shifts are common, especially in hospitals — and the job is physically taxing. In addition, nurses must deal with human suffering on a daily basis. Nursing requires a high level of vigilance to assure patient safety in an environment that is complex and may even be chaotic.
