The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) is the Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions. The board is charged with the responsibility of conducting an entrance Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for prospective undergraduates into Nigerian universities. The board is also charged with the responsibility to administer similar examinations for applicants to Nigerian public and private monotechnics, polytechnics, and colleges of educations. All of these candidates must have obtained the West Africa School Certificate, now West African Examinations Council, WAEC, or its equivalent, National Examination Council (Nigeria), NECO. In carrying out its mandate, JAMB sets cutoff marks for each course below which a student cannot be admitted. Medicine is one of the favorite courses of young school leavers in Nigeria despite the fact that it takes many years to earn a degree in medicine when compared to other courses, the medical student spends at least 6 years in medical school to graduate as a medical doctor with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. Following this, the graduate does a twelve-month uninterrupted clinical internship (House Job) before being licensed fully by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to practice medicine. The housemanship is in the four clinical areas Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics and Obstetrics, and Gynaecology. This internship structure channels the young doctor through clinical medicine. Other areas are clinical practice, laboratory medicine, basic medical sciences, health system management, public health, and international agencies, emerging fields. Nnamdi Azikiwe University came into being as an offshoot of the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH).
