Public Health Careers Salaries In Nigeria
Nigeria has more reported cases of malaria and deaths due to malaria than any other country in the world and currently accounts for around 29% of the global malaria burden. This is in addition to the huge burden of several other diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, diarrheal diseases, and other conditions such as VVF, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, and other public health challenges.
The huge numbers of individuals affected by these diseases and conditions make Nigeria one of the hotbeds for public health activities among developing nations of the world due to the number of non-governmental organizations and development partners currently engaged in various projects across the country.
However, landing a job with little to no relevant experience can be difficult in any industry. In public health, graduates may find that employers want specific skills and hands-on training from even their most entry-level candidates. So how do students gain the necessary experience and avoid the prospect of a long and difficult job search? Learn how internships, volunteering, and other valuable opportunities can help students grow professionally, learn the ropes and get their foot in the door.
There are many options for a successful career in public health, but it should be noted that you more than likely need a degree. Before getting to the highest paying careers in public health, let’s review the top public health degrees, and why they are important.
Bachelors of Public Health: The BPH degree is the undergraduate option for college students. It is not a requirement to study a specific BS in a Public Health program, as many students take an undergraduate path in Health Administration, Nursing, Informatics, or a different healthcare degree. The primary reason for this is most people working within public health have their MPH (most MPH programs require a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field). However, if you know you want to work in Public Health, you may as well find a BPH degree. BPH programs are offered online and on campus. SEE: Public Health Schools In Nigeria
Master of Public Health: By far the most common degree for those working in public health, the MPH degree is also offered online. The MPH is not required to work in public health, but most public health professionals would recommend it to work in both the private and public sectors. Perhaps the best feature of the MPH is that is offered online for working professionals that already have a bachelor’s degree in public health or a related field. There are a lot of different concentrations if you want a specialized MPH degree: Epidemiology, Global Health, Community Health, General Public Health, and Environmental Health are some of the most common but view all of the different types of public health degrees for more information. Doctor of Public Health: The DPH degree is the terminal degree of the public health field. If you are looking to become a public health professor, teaching college students, or you are wanting to delve deep into a research position, you might consider continuing on to a DPH or DrPH (or Ph.D. in Public Health).
