What is Dysport?
Dysport is an injection containing abobotulinumtoxinA (Botulinum toxin type A). AbobotulinumtoxinA is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Dysport is used in adults to treat cervical dystonia (abnormal head position and neck pain).
Dysport is also used to treat muscle spasms and stiffness (spasticity) of the arms, hands, legs, and feet in adults and children at least 2 years old. This medicine will not treat spasticity caused by cerebral palsy. Dysport is also used to temporarily lessen the appearance of facial wrinkles.
How is Dysport given?
Dysport injections should be given only by a trained medical professional, even when used for cosmetic purposes. Dysport is injected into a muscle by a healthcare provider. The injections should be spaced at least 3 months apart. Children should not be treated with this medicine more often than every 12 to 16 weeks.
Dysport injections may be given into more than one area at a time, depending on the condition being treated. The effects of this injection are temporary. Your symptoms may return completely within 3 months. After repeat injections, it may take less and less time before your symptoms return, especially if your body develops antibodies to the botulinum toxin. Do not seek botulinum toxin injections from more than one medical professional at a time. If you switch healthcare providers, tell your new provider how long it has been since your last botulinum toxin injection. Using Dysport more often than prescribed will not make it more effective and may result in serious side effects.
How Long Does Dysport Last
Dysport can start taking effect after a couple of days. Results last between three and four months. You will need to go back for more injections around this time to maintain treatment effects.
How long does Dysport last on the forehead?
Dysport typically lasts 3-4 months in most patients. Many patients will return every 3 months in order to maintain their results and avoid allowing the wrinkles to return. That being said, this time frame is an average, and some patients return more often, while others are able to maintain relatively good results with injections every 6 months (although this is uncommon).
How long does a Dysport treatment take?
While the actual time varies case by case and depends greatly on the details of the treatment, generally, patients are in and out of the medical spa within a half hour to hour at most with no downtime.
Is a Dysport treatment painful?
Dysport typically has minimal side effects and in most cases, the process is not very painful. The short lived swelling and redness can heal rather quickly as well.
When will I see results?
As the redness and swelling from the injections subside, you will slowly begin to see results. It’s important to remember that it takes time and everyone heals differently. You will see the true results after a few days. That being said, if you are planning a treatment for an event in which you want to look your best, make sure to schedule your treatment at least two weeks in advance to give yourself ample time to heal and look your absolute best.
How long does the treatment last?
Dysport treatments can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months. After, you will begin to see motion in the treated areas again. Regular upkeep and touch ups are required to maintain the treatment effects.
Do I need to tell the doctor about any medications I am taking?
Yes, absolutely, yes. As a rule of thumb, if you are ever having any medical treatment, always tell your doctor everything. Some medications such as Tylenol and other Ibuprofens can thin the blood and make the side effects of the treatment appear more severe than they actually are. Blood thinning also increases the time it would normally take to heal. Make sure to consult your doctor about any medication you are taking prior to the procedure so that the correct precautionary measure can be taken with time.
How do I know if the treatment is right for me?
In most cases, if you have normal skin and minimal to no allergies, your skin will respond well to Dysport treatments. If you are allergic to Dysport or any of its ingredients, are allergic to cow’s milk protein, or have previously had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, consult your doctor in advance and protect yourself from any negative side effects that may occur from the treatment. If you have had surgical changes to your face that have caused changes to the sides of your face, weak muscles in the treatment areas, deep facial scars, or thick oily skin, Dysport may not be the best treatment option for you. Is Dysport the same as other botulinum toxin products such as Myobloc or Botox?
No, Dysport is not the same dose as any of the other botulinum toxin products and a dose of Dysport cannot be compared to a any other botulinum toxin product you may have used in the past.

What are the possible side effects of Dysport?
Dysport may cause serious side effects including:

- pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, and
- general ill feeling

The most common side effects of Dysport include:
- muscle weakness near where the medicine was injected,
- dizziness,
- depressed mood,
- bruising, bleeding, pain, redness, or swelling where the injection was given,
- headache,
- muscle pain,
- pain in your arms or legs,
- fever,
- cough,
- sore throat,
- runny or stuffy nose,
- drooping eyelids,
- dry or puffy eyes,
- nausea,
- dry mouth,
- trouble swallowing, and
- feeling tired

WARNING: DISTANT SPREAD OF TOXIN EFFECT
Postmarketing reports indicate that the effects of DYSPORT® and all botulinum toxin products may spread from the area of injection to produce symptoms consistent with botulinum toxin effects. These may include asthenia, generalized muscle weakness, diplopia, blurred vision, ptosis, dysphagia, dysphonia, dysarthria, urinary incontinence and breathing difficulties. These symptoms have been reported hours to weeks after injection. Swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life threatening and there have been reports of death. The risk of symptoms is probably greatest in children treated for spasticity but symptoms can also occur in adults treated for spasticity and other conditions, particularly in those patients who have underlying conditions that would predispose them to these symptoms. In unapproved uses, including upper limb spasticity in children, and in approved indications, cases of spread of effect have been reported at doses comparable to or lower than the maximum recommended total dose.
